Be a Hero Donate Blood!

January 28, 2016 in Best of Both, healthcare, paying it forward by MyBestofBothWorlds

It’s easy to be a hero donate blood.  It’s really that simple!  Did you know January is National Blood Donor Month?   Contributions of blood and platelets really do help save people’s lives.  I’m a big believer in paying it forward and making a difference.

Last weekend it was reported that thirty inches of snow fell at John F. Kennedy airport only minutes from my home.  This blizzard caused a serious dip in the amount of blood donations that were recieved through-out the tri-state area.  Bad weather is bad news when it comes to the blood supply.

Well now that roads are cleared, find your way to a local blood drive! To find a blood drive or donation center near you, visit

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given every seven days and up to 24 times a year. Anyone between the ages of 17 and 75 who is in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Healthy individuals 75 and older can donate blood, if they present written permission from their physician obtained within two weeks of their donation.

I am a Blood Captain when we hold blood drives at my hospital.  Sometimes, the reason people are relucant to donate is they worry about their safety.  It isn’t possible to contract any type of infectious disease from blood donation, as a brand new, sterile, disposable needle is used for each blood donation. Once used, the needle is discarded.  Assuring the safety of the blood supply is a rigorous process that includes testing, proper processing, labeling and storage, and careful quality control of donated blood.  There’s even a blood donation rewards program called Donor Advantage to help motivate and appreicate donors! So what are you waiting for?
