No More Braces!

May 21, 2014 in Best of Both, teenagers by MyBestofBothWorlds

No more braces just a beautiful straight smile! That’s right it was a BIG day recently in our house.  After much ado and one thousand two hundred fifty-eight days to be exact my girl Kristen has NO MORE BRACES just a beautiful straight smile.

We got our confirmation appointment call that said it was a “very special day for Kristen” and indeed it was. It was the day when Kristen’s braces are finally coming off. After countless six-week intervals of selecting the colorful rubber bands to coincide with the holidays – the big day has finally arrived.

Look who is so happy!

We have used Kleinrock Orthodontics whose motto is rock your smile! And rock it they do!  We’ve used Dr. Kleinrock’s  practice for Kristen’s big sister Kaitlyn too, so we were very familiar with what to expect his milestone visit.  First the braces have to be popped off and then get ready for the pink gooey stuff to make more molds of the uppers and lowers to create retainers.

I should have known better, as I offered my hand to Kristen to squeeze as Dr. Zeppieri popped the wires off each tooth. I should have removed my rings as my slight of build fourteen year old daughter crushed my hands and my poor fingers lost their circulation. After a little bit of hand crushing, the wires came off then it was time to file the glue/ cement from each tooth. Fun times. Thank goodness this isn’t a very long process, it just felt that way since I no longer had usage of my right hand.

After the impressions were taken and Kristen cleaned out her mouth of all that pink gooey stuff, we went to sit in the waiting room. By the way, I wanted to take photos of her with the pink stuff in her mouth but was banned from doing so as she didn’t want that to end up in the blog posting. But all kidding aside-Kristen must have taken no less than one hundred selfies of just her beautifully straight and bright white smile. At one point I was at the front desk discussing the insurance payment and she snap chatted me from three feet away! And it was another selfie close up smile.

Once the retainers were ready, we got our strict instructions about round the clock utilization unless she is eating for the five days as well as cleaning instructions from one of the assistants. They practiced getting the top and bottom retainers on and off a couple of times to make sure that Kristen was comfortable with the process. By this point Kristen was absolutely giddy, gleeful and super silly. Pulling out her lips, picking up the handheld mirror at least a dozen times, she kept saying how much room was in her mouth, how white and smooth her teeth.
I told her that her cheeks were going to hurt from all the smiling and close up selfies to which she giggled even more.

With one final check by Dr. Z we were good to go. Once last six appointment to re-evaluate how Kristen is doing with her retainer and maintenance. Then we were off to buy some coveted gum for when she is allowed to wear the retainer for ten-hour periods of time until her six-week appointment. Let me just say that Miss Kristen really took her sweet time picking out a pack of gum – sugar free of course. Perhaps the reason she took so long to make her selection was that she may have been distracted by my ranting about the importance of wearing her retainers as instructed. I just want to make sure it sinks in. And then she reminded me that she did a better job than her sister brushing with her braces which is absolutely 100% correct, but being a Mom I just can’t help myself. Repeated messaging works in my opinion.

And I really need to share that the snapchats are still coming in strong–here’s what we’ve been sending back and forth.
