I have the pleasure of bringing you May This Be The Best Year of Your Life a Memoir review and giveaway. As readers of My Best of Both Worlds know, we all strive for family work life balance. As Moms, wives, daughters, sisters, friends, we play each many different roles in our lives to the fullest and that’s why I think I enjoyed Sandra Bornstein’s book so much. Normally I tend to read all sorts of fiction, but as I’m growing older and find myself reflecting more often than not, I am finding that I am thoroughly enjoying memoirs. And I can truthfully say I enjoyed traveling with Sandra on her journey around the world and back again.
Sandra’s story is richly written. She shares with us her life altering decision to follow her husband Ira to India when he is offered a job, her first chapter aptly called Deciding to Change Direction. Her ability to capture her thoughts and experiences through her journals brings to life the taxi rides through the streets of India, I wanted to hold on myself at times. I don’t know how many people I know that would make such a courageous and utterly terrifying decision leaving behind so many of the creature comforts we take for granted. Hot running water comes immediately to mind as well as NOT being harassed by a troop of monkeys. However, I don’t want to be a spoiler!
I will share one of my favorite lines from Sandra’s book where she is summing her courage to have stepped outside of her normal life she quotes Eleanor Roosevelt: “A woman is like a tea bag- you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.” Haven’t we all had a been there moment similar to this expression of feelings?
Sandra Bornstein, an international educator and writer, has taught K-12 students in the United States and abroad as well as college level courses at the University of Colorado and Front Range Community College. Sandra holds two master’s degrees- one in Education from the University of Colorado and another in Jewish Studies from Spertus College.
In 2010, her husband’s international job created a unique opportunity to live abroad. In India, she fulfilled three passions – a desire to travel, a zeal for writing, and a love of teaching. Sandra’s Indian adventure became the backdrop for her book, May This Be the Best Year of Your Life: A Memoir. Sandra currently lives in Colorado with her husband and their cat, Chloe.
Here’s the video trailer where Sandra explains in her own words what her journey, how it started and where it took her.
