Brave A Shave

March 8, 2013 in Best of Both, Charity, kindness, paying it forward by MyBestofBothWorlds

The hashtag was Brave A Shave! And brave my brother did as did hundreds of others on March 2nd in Las Vegas at the NY NY Hotel and Casino.  The event draws hundreds of spectators and supporters as its held on the Brooklyn Bridge of the NY NY Hotel.

Charity begins at home and I have to say my Mom and Dad have done a great job instilling this value to my brother and I as well as our children.  Recently, my brother Michael just participated in his fourth head shaving event to benefit St. Baldrick’s. St. Baldrick’s is an organization that helps raise awareness and funds to find a cure for childhood cancer.  According to their website the reason they exist is because, “worldwide, 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. And in the U.S., more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease—more than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies and diabetes combined.  The St. Baldrick’s Foundation exists to change the realities by working closly with leading pediatric oncologists, we determine the most promising research to fund and create funding priorities to make the greatest impact for children with cancer.”

Brave a shave! My brother raised almost $3000 this year by shaving his head for this awesome cause.  If you are interested in donating-you can click on Michael’s St. Baldrick’s donation page.

For those of you that grew up knowing my family, you know how important my brother’s hair is to him.  As a matter of fact, you weren’t even allowed to touch it during his teenage years because you would mess it up.  So to see him participate in this event is extra special.  As parents now, both Michael and I both know how precious the gift of our childrens’ health is to us.  So while I might not ever shave my head, I definitely support my brother Michael in his endeavors as well as breaking out the checkbook to support a great organization like St. Baldrick’s.  The event on the Brooklyn Bridge raised in excess of $65,000.  Well done!

ALL SHAVED!

ALL SHAVED!

My brother proudly sports his newly shaved head as he heads back to work at the South Point Hotel Casino & Spa where he is the director of food operations.

As a postscript- Michael’s wife Julie posted a very funny Facebook status about their two year old son Jackson, yelling at the TV set saying Daddy Daddy Daddy when Matt Lauer from the Today Show appeared on the screen.  Bald is beautiful!!
