A New Tradition is Born

My daughter Kaitlyn tweeted this the night before she was leaving for college:
“Beginnings are usually scary and endings are usually sad, but its everything in between that makes it all worthwhile.”
Last week, while the college-bound countdown wound itself down to the wire, piles of items appeared in the living room (and we removed seats from our mini van to make room) a new tradition was born—a girls’ lunch with a mega huge dessert. My Mom wanted to spend some quality time with her girls and we went to a local dinner in our area. HER TREAT!!!
Over lunch we reminisced, laughed, speculated about the future and really enjoyed the fact that Gramma (that’s how we spell it in our house) was footing the bill for lunch!! After the meal, talk turned to padding the bill. I was in favor of ordering another meal, so there would be no cooking in the evening, but I got vetoed! The girls, however, languished over the desert menu. Kristen selected a warm brownie, with vanilla ice-cream, chocolate syrup, whipped cream and chocolate chips. Kaitlyn picked a grilled slice of pound cake with cookies and cream ice-cream, and whipped cream.
Well, when our waitress returned with platter-sized plates, the girls’ eyes were bigger! Not only did they look good but there were extra spoons so of course Gramma and I had to try them. Boy were they yummy!
Next time we all decided that ONE plate with the brownie would be the choice with four spoons and more importantly a tradition was born where Gramma takes us out to lunch and foots the bill again!!!!
So special! It’s those moments that make memories and traditions! Glad you had fun!!!
If only the bill were that reasonable…..no I have to decide which medication to order this month in order to pay the lunch tab..(you know I’m on a fixed income) I also want to know why I didn’t get a vote on making this a tradition…I was told this is now a TRADITION…If I have to pay shouldn’t I get a vote …..
Seriously, it was a wonderful time with my girls..we did a lot of talking, reminiscing and lots of laughter. It was bittersweet knowing my granddaughter was leaving to begin her adult life…did I say adult..where did my baby go???
The changes keep coming, I hope I’m up for all of them & all the new TRADITIONS I’m sure will cost me lots of $$$$$…I wouldn’t have it any other way..
Love you all,

mom aka “gramma” & gerri
so glad you are all around to share in the traditions.. xoxo
Kaitlyn,
You are about to embark on what could be considered by most to be the greatest adventure of your life. Take advantage of every single day! I wish you the best, because…. you are wonderful.
What a fun tradition! My daughter is 16 and I can’t imagine how hard it will be for me when she goes off to college. I love the quote your daughter tweeted – it’s a perfectly true sentiment!
Awesome. Sometimes I get sad because my children didn’t grow up around any of their grandparents.
LOL to the footing of the bill! That really did look like a delicious dessert.
Love traditions that make transition a bit easier! It sounds like you had a delicious time! 🙂
Glad you got some girl time and found a new tradition! I can’t imagine how I’ll feel when my daughter one day leaves the nest.
it is always nice to sit down, relax and reminisce around with the people you love!
